EU supports a new approach to innovation in Yogyakarta

Operating through its EU-Indonesia Trade Cooperation Facility (TCF), the European Union is encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in Yogyakarta by providing funding and technical assistance aimed at discovering and assisting new business and production ideas in the batik, leather goods and handicrafts for which the region is renowned.

The initiative, called ‘Innovating Jogja’, was launched in July 2016 and is being supported by the Ministry of Industry, BNI Bank, universities and a range of businesses.

Following widespread consultations with a growing number of highly interested and committed stakeholders, TCF decided to move away from the traditional, top-down model of using a business innovation centre to incubate and promote new business ideas. Instead, the decision was taken to create a platform for all stakeholders to work together to encourage and strengthen innovation across the whole community at city level.

Innovating Jogja’s principal aims are to stimulate new ideas to boost the marketability and productivity of local industries and to encourage the effective introduction of innovative approaches, processes, technologies and systems to improve competitiveness.

Absolutely central to the initiative will be an open innovation competition to encourage entrepreneurs to come up with new concepts, followed by a boot camp where selected candidates will receive professional support to develop their ideas and products, including marketing and branding, financial management, intellectual property rights, and business planning. After the boot camp, 12 winners will be selected to go through an acceleration programme and receive more intensive mentoring and guidance to develop their ideas further, such as prototyping and market testing,. Finally, six champions will be chosen to receive financial and business support.

Applications to take part in the competition are now being invited from creative and innovative entrepreneurs in batik, leather and handicrafts industries. Anyone who is interested should visit www.innovatingjogja.com or e-mail info@innovatingjogja.com for more detailed information.
