The legal method training on the WTO Dispute Settlement mechanism organised under the EU-Indonesia Trade Cooperation Facility ended on 27 October 2015 with a simulation exercise designed to replicate a consultation meeting, bringing to a close two days of training focused on developing an understanding of the practical and procedural aspects of the WTO Dispute Settlement proceedings.
Officials from six different units in the the Ministry of Trade (MoT) participated in the four different training sessions, which had begun at the end of August. The first workshop gave participants the background to the Dispute Settlement mechanism and its institutions in the WTO, and presented the different stages of the dispute settlement mechanism. The two following workshops focused on drafting skills, namely drafting and responding to questions raised during the consultation process. For the simulation exercise the participants were divided into two groups and had to prepare and present opening and closing remarks, as well as questions and answers. The simulation was based on a real case brought under the WTO agreement on safeguards.
The officials who attended greatly appreciated the practical and interactive manner of the workshop and welcomed the opportunity it gave them to improve their legal drafting skills.
